The 2,100 square-feet Adams Building was originally constructed in the early 1900s as Witt Drug Store. J.C. Adams bought and updated the building in 1935 to serve as a jewelry store, which he relocated from nearby Division Street. His name is engraved above the storefront. The interior features 14-feet tall ceilings with the original tin ceiling panels still intact. Vintage metal cornice was matched to the 1930s trim and painted a glossy white. Similar LED fixtures to the original art deco lighting were installed down the building's center, and much of the open-air feel was kept to fit the purpose of the new space.
The goal with this project was to revive the structure and preserve many of its historic elements while providing a modern and useful space for future business. The openness of the original building was maintained by use of glass walls and doors with lowered ceilings in the office spaces and conference room that line the south wall. The northernmost side of the building is used as retail space for a shipping and printing shop near the front with a breakroom and lounge space at the rear. The multi-use space nods to Mr. Adams's jewelry store, which offered a hodge-podge of items and services to his patrons.
Much of the external storefront was also restored. Though the windows have been squared off to run evenly with the sidewalk, the overall look brings back many of the building's original elements, including the shiny black vitrolite framing the front windows and door. Even the Adams Office Center sign serves as a reminder of its predecessor, Adams Jewelry, and the original awning was salvaged to return 116 N Moose to its 1930s look. A fresh coat of stucco on the west and north walls and clear sealant to the exposed brick round out the building's exterior. Atop the roof sits almost 100 solar panels to offset energy consumption of the newly revived Adams Office Center.
Here at Adams, we're doing our part to be environmentally conscious with our energy consumption. We installed nearly 100 solar panels on our rooftop that generate electricity continuously and help reduce our environmental impact.
